Question 7 At first, the Iroquois were freindly with the European traders, and traded many objects for strange European goods and weapons, especially the guns. With these, they conquered a lorge number of Indians. The Iroquois were bitter enemies of the Algonquin. SInce the French allied with the Algonquins, the Iroquois sided with the British. It is said that if the French were able to persuade the Iroquois, they could have won the war. During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) , The Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga nad Seneca allied with the British. In 1779, General John Sullivan attacked and destroyed many villages of these tribes. This was a horrible loss, but I beleive the worse loss was the loss of their homeland. After the war, most of the Cayuga and Mohawk moved to reservations in Canada. The Oneida moved to Wisconsin. Others remained and fought bravely against the white men, but like others, they could only fail. The Iroquois did not like their land given up to their enemies, but knew that they faced a choice- change or extinction. Copyright Notice: This site is Copyright 1998 by ME.
